Creating Your Routine Workshop
Why Create a Routine?
Now you may be thinking… Why the heck would I want a routine if I’m a grown up and I can do whatever I want, whenever I want?
Let me explain why is it sooo important to master routines if you want to run your business like a CEO.
When you were a kid, if you grew up in a conventional house, I bet you had a routine. I can’t speak for everybody else, but I know I had one myself.
Wake up, have breakfast, get dressed, make bed, brush teeth, make lunch, leave for school… Come back from school, catch up with Mom, have dinner, do homework, watch TV, brush teeth again, go to bed…
Sounds pretty boring now that I’m saying it out loud…
I would wake up and go to bed at the same time every day, have dinner at the same time every night, had to be back around a certain time when I would go out and play with my friends on every weekend.
I sure bitched about my schedule to my Mom, but I didn’t realize how important it was to have one at the time. A routine provides you with structure and discipline, which helps you be efficient and organized.
That’s why it’s also important to have a routine when you’re a grown up, when you don’t have your parents to tell you what to do. If you don’t have a good routine in place you’ll struggle with productivity and probably end up winging your day. This can result not only in not getting work done or reaching your goals, but also in adding stress to your life, not taking care of your health, and not sleeping well.
There is no one size fit all when it comes to routines, so you might not be able to find one that suits you easily, that’s why I suggest journaling every step of the way to find the process that works best for you, depending on your needs and body requirements. Some people are early birds, some other can’t function unless they sleep in late. I personally become a gremlin if I don’t go to bed early at night, and I am at my most creative and inspired in the morning, and through trial and error I also realized that I am more productive if I hit the gym right after breakfast instead of in the morning or in the evening.
I took the necessary time to learn what worked best for me and my body. The idea of owning your business and working remotely also allows you to build the perfect schedule for yourself so it should be a priority to find the ideal routine for you and your business needs. It is one luxury that not every one can have. A productive routine can help you control your day and be the best CEO you can be.
Another good reason of having a routine in place is that, on those days where there’s some missing willpower and motivation, it will be much easier to still get things done as your routine will already be wired in yourself, and it won’t require much effort anymore.
Sometimes, the simple fact of getting your routine done is going to give you the little push of confidence needed to go on with your day. Even making your bed in your morning can give you some sense of satisfaction and accomplishment, and motivates you to continue getting things done.
Remember that creating a routine is not about restricting yourself, becoming boring or methodical. It doesn’t turn you into an old grumpy cat lady who does every thing every day the same way. It does not mean you are losing freedom or flexibility, on the contrary. It’s to be able to get more done in less time so you can have even more free time to do things other than focusing on your business goals, and having your body be more efficient so you can use your skills at their full potential.
When you try and figure out a routine, you need to take into consideration your sleep schedule: how long do you have to sleep to feel fully rested and energized?
How many meals and what type of food should you eat to fuel your day.
When should you cut off caffeine if you’re drinking it, so it doesn’t affect your sleep?
When are you the most creative during the day so you can block off content creation time?
When are you the most high vibes, so you can block off client calls time?
Do you need to take a nap? If so, when do you normally feel a crash, and how long should you sleep for?
What type of workout is best for you, and when is it best to get it done? Some people do it early morning, while other will get in a yoga class at night, if you want to stick to a workout you need to find the right fit for you.
How to meal prep so you don’t lose time in the kitchen or money and your gym gains, by ordering junk food.
What time should you go to bed at and wake up at?
Is there something that is consuming too much time in your day that could be resolved or changed?
What are your non-negotiable, what do you NEED to do every day? For example, for me, meditation, reading, writing, going to yoga is something that I need to do, no matter what.
Those are questions you need to ask yourself to find the best routine.
You may now download the attached file and create a morning and evening routine you really like. It takes 21 days to form a new habit, so it’s important you stick to it every day at the beginning. I have also attached my own routine as an inspiration, in case you need some.
When building a new routine, you need to pinpoint what is important to you and make it a priority, and you can only do so by doing introspection. Don’t forget to journal your way through so you can have a better idea of what type of routine works for you.
By having a CEO routine, you also eliminate procrastination and bad habits you might have formed in the past.
I’d recommend implementing one habit a time. By repeating the same thing every day, it will eventually be programmed in your brain, and be as natural as brushing your teeth.
Remember: Consistency is key.
